Endoscopic spine surgery, rapidly gaining popularity worldwide and practiced in select centers in Turkey, provides effective treatment for elderly patients immobilized by conditions like herniated discs, scoliosis, and spinal osteoarthritis. Orthopedics and Spine Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Mehmet Atıf Aksekili explained that this "closed" surgical method allows for quick recovery, enabling patients to stand up faster.
According to Aksekili, the surgery involves incisions of only 5-7 millimeters, reaching directly into the spine to treat calcification or disc issues using cameras and specialized tools. This minimally invasive approach minimizes damage to surrounding tissues and reduces the need for implants like screws or plates.
Aksekili noted that patients often experience significantly shorter recovery times compared to traditional open surgeries. He highlighted that the technology allows for approximately 30x magnification of the pathological area, enhancing treatment accuracy.
The method, known as "unilateral biportal endoscopy," was initially developed in South Korea and is now prevalent in countries like Japan and various European nations. In Turkey, its popularity is on the rise, with expectations that it will become a standard surgical method.
