  • Semaglutide medications, including Ozempic and Wegovy, show cardiovascular benefits alongside weight loss.
  • A new meta-analysis evaluated the drug’s heart-protective effects and associated gastrointestinal side effects.
  • Higher doses link to increased rates of gastrointestinal issues.

The meta-analysis reveals that semaglutide significantly reduces cardiovascular risks, including a 17% decrease in cardiovascular-related deaths and a 76% reduction in heart failure hospitalizations. Both diabetes and obesity patients demonstrated pronounced cardiovascular benefits from the drug.

People taking a 2.4 mg dose noted the highest gastrointestinal side effects. Adverse effects include nausea, stomach pain, and diarrhea, primarily seen in subcutaneous forms of semaglutide. The findings suggest the medication may yield more benefits orally, but adherence might vary based on side effects.

Gastrointestinal Side Effects and Management

Those encountering adverse effects were more likely to discontinue treatment, particularly at higher doses. Strategies to manage side effects include starting on lower doses for better tolerance and adjusting dosages based on individual responses.

Experts recommend dietary modifications, such as slower eating and focusing on a protein-rich diet, to mitigate gastrointestinal symptoms associated with semaglutide.
